Leaving Better Legacies

Thoughts About the Legacies We Leave

Leaving Better Legacies for the World Through Creativity and Artistry

I took art in school for a while before landing in music. Also, I have been blessed to have spent time with my grandmother, artist Grace Bilger. She showed me how to draw eyes since they fascinated me. A few years ago, I considered writing and illustrating a children’s book that focused on the eyes. I drew various animals and creatures around the world and focused on their eyes. In the mockup of the book, the very last page was different. Instead of another drawing, it had a reflective, mirror-like page. The reader could look at their own eyes, inspect them, and see how beautiful they were like in the book.

Though I did not finish the book, but the sentiment of helping others towards something better through artistry still is a part of my core.  (Below, draft pages I drew for the book).

In my family, we tend to leave positive, creative legacies like my grandmother, mother, and more. A legacy is something left behind for family, friends, students, or colleagues. It can be tangible or it can be a manner of living, like a tradition. The idea of leaving legacies had me reflecting about recent tragedies. I wondered about the legacy passed on to the kids who committed such heinous crimes? And then, I wondered about the legacy propagated by media, social sites, and commentaries?  Then, I wondered what we would see on the last reflective, mirror-like page?

Life is way too short not to be doing what we’re supposed to be doing. Our time here on earth is fleeting. Each new day is a renewed chance to make changes for the better and increase opportunities to leave positive legacies. Try to express and relate in encouraging, creative, and affirming ways, and try to fill time with lasting value and meaning. We want to propagate eloquence and beauty. I hope it multiplies
