Writer Thoughts
Life Gets in the Way
You’ve set your goals to finish your books and embark on your publishing business and future. You’re excited and ready to finish your best work, getting those words out and heading toward the finish line. Then, life happens. The truth for all creatives is that life gets in the way. It’s just how it is.
That can mean massive changes at the day job, causing you to have more work and be mentally exhausted at the end of the day. Family problems of all kinds creep in, and then to top it all off, nature malfunctions and everyone is without power for a week or more. With all those pauses, you stop writing.
A dear writer friend calls the events that get in the way of artistic pursuits, “The Threshold Guardians.” Their purpose is to serve as watchers for the gates of creative works, ensuring that you take up your hero’s journey to grow and overcome, and really mean to reach that finish line with a completed work… even if you crawl over it.
You may have to dial things back, like writing with what time you do have. If it’s 15 minutes today, that means more words than yesterday and another small step towards finishing. You can do it. Write 15 today. Make it 20 tomorrow… and so on.
